The health and sustainability of the environment is an ever growing concern. The UN Environment has created a Frontiers series which links science to outcome-oriented policies to address the emerging environmental issues facing the planet.
In the Frontiers 2018/19 report synthetic biology is highlighted; posing as a concern, issues surrounding its use are discussed. The unforeseen hazards of releasing gene-edited organism or synthetic life into the environment is a cause for regulatory concern and are explored in this chapter.
